GitHub Registry

Artificial Intelligence

My apologies for being all over the place today, that's the problem when living at the intersection of AI, bio and aging. But one piece of news yesterday caught my attention: GitHub announced the launch of the GitHub MCP Registry.

Why is it a big deal, you ask? First, let's remember that GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 and, although it operated somewhat independently for some time, it is now more integrated and more of a division. So the big deal, from my perspective, is that it is positioning itself as a beacon of clarity in a messy universe of hard-to-discover MCP servers.

"Together with the open source community, Anthropic, and the MCP Steering Committee, we’re building an open ecosystem where discovering the right AI capability is as simple as searching GitHub. The GitHub MCP Registry is your fastest path from idea to integration, and the foundation for a healthier, more interoperable AI toolchain." From within GitHub and VS Code, of course, and "signal over noise with servers sorted by GitHub stars and community activity."

Can't blame them for tying it to their product, and it is one issue (among many) in need of a resolution. Outsourcing evaluation to the community is not a bad idea, but who is going to actually "guarantee" the servers and their tools? Are they secure, are they doing what they are supposed to do? Are their descriptions appropriate? Who is in control of discoverability? We'll see how this plays out. It is definitely a strong signal.
