Comment on Tamsin Lewis
Dr Tamsin Lewis thank you for that! The key here, as with some of the other, more visible, stressors (poor sleep, ultra-processed food), is compounding: the continuous accumulation over time of tiny stressors/injuries leads to chronic, sub-clinical, systemic inflammation that in turns leads to chronic clinical conditions. From that perspective, all stressors are somewhat invisible because their effects are only felt over time, sometimes after a long time.
Initial post:
The 3 biggest threats to your longevity?
You’re exposed to them daily. 👇
We often think about nutrition, exercise, and sleep as the main builders of longevity.
But there are less visible factors that quietly accelerate inflammation and ageing:
1️⃣ Air quality
Urban pollution is inhaled DEEP into the lungs, triggering IMMUNE inflammation that overtime can contribute to cardiovascular and brain ageing.
Tip: Avoid running or walking along busy high streets. Pollution drops off incrementally on side streets and with more distance from major routes. At home, invest in a HEPA air purifier. Wear a decent mask if you cycle, or use barriers like Vicks first defence/vaseline under your nostrils.
2️⃣ Overhead white lighting
Constant exposure to harsh overhead LED lighting taxes the nervous system. Flicker, glare, and the wrong spectrum wavelengths keep the brain in a subtle stress state, scrambling your circadian rhythm – even during the day! Over time this shows up as poor sleep, brain fog, and accelerated biological ageing.
Tip: Use warm-spectrum bulbs or blue-light blocking glasses, especially after sunset.
3️⃣ Chemicals and plastics in foods
We’re exposed to unprecedented levels of microplastics and additives in packaged and processed foods. These foreign compounds confuse the body, and trigger inflammation as the body attempts to get rid of these invaders.
Tip: Minimize the amount of food you purchase in plastic, and always was food that was stored in plastic before use.
Why this matters:
Inflammation after an injury is a normal repair response, but the inflammation that accompanies these stressors is different. It’s chronic, caused by foreign exposures the body can’t easily eliminate or override.
Over time, this makes cellular processes sluggish. Ageing cells die off and release inflammatory signals that interfere with energy production – a phenomenon known as senescence.
This low-grade chronic inflammation accelerates every aspect of ageing.
Longevity is simply a side effect of a life low in disease and dysfunction.
In other words, HEALTHSPAN.
