A whole new level of gut-brain connection
I missed this paper by Arash Grakoui and colleagues at Emory University but I think it is worth bringing it up: they show that bacteria in dysbiotic mice (fed a high-fat diet) can migrate straight to the brain via the vagus nerve. Not systemic circulation (not glymphatic system either? not mentioned in the paper). Direct road to the brain. That's gut permeability taken to a different level. The fact that bacteria were also detected in the brains of murine models for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and autism spectrum disorder fed normal diet raises the intriguing possibility of bacterial translocation into the brain being a causal connection between dysbiosis and neurological conditions. Caveats: (1) mice; (2) murine models are often contrived and do not necessarily replicate the pathology of the diseases they are supposed to be models of.
