Tim Opler’s Women’s Health history

Biology

Another fantastic report by Stifel Financial Corp.'s Tim Opler on the history of women's health. Given its "Volume I" subtitle, I am eagerly expecting Volume II. Women's health has been under-invested and under-developed since the dawn of medicine. It is finally coming out and Opler's report sets the stage for understanding how wide the gap is. It is amazing to think that it is only in 2021 that the NIH created a new framework under the incredibly talented Sarah Temkin to move "beyond just "female-specific" conditions (like pregnancy or cervical cancer) to address the vast spectrum of chronic illnesses that affect both sexes but occur far more frequently in women." The program funded a number of insightful studies, a number of which have now been canceled due to shifting priorities, but the momentum cannot and should not be stopped.
