The Magnificent One!

Biotech & Pharma

As Eli Lilly and Company's market capitalization shoots over $1trn again (after reporting quarterly revenue approaching $20bn!) and exceeds the value of yesterday's member of the trillion dollar club (Walmart), let's pause and appreciate how much of an outlier the company is.

Big pharma and big biotech overall have lagged the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite for 25 years. Just for comparison, I've added the stock of one of the most successful (diversified) pharma companies, J&J. Lilly's current approach suggests that it could be just the beginning, with its stock price a great weapon in a landscape increasingly driven by "external R&D", partnerships and licensing deals.
