3 days ago Mike Krieger resigned from Figma's board "the same day that The Information reported that Anthropic’s next model, Opus 4.7, will include design tools that could compete with Figma’s primary offering" (Techcrunch, link in the comments). Opus 4.7 launched to, erm, mixed reviews but today we got to the bottom of it and it came fast: Claude design! Figma's stock lost close to 7% at market close (and down 80%+ from its post-IPO pop). Claude Design looks less like a full Figma replacement and more like an attack on the fastest-growing part of Figma’s stack: AI-assisted ideation, prototyping, lightweight visual production, and design-to-build handoff. In other words, it is not really challenging “old Figma”; it is challenging Figma’s AI future. The overlap is strongest with Figma Make, Figma Sites, and some Figma Slides use cases, especially quick prototypes, landing pages, and on-brand decks. The overlap is weaker with the deep, pixel-precise, multiplayer design-editor layer that product design teams live in every day. So what? 1️⃣ Claude Design is a serious competitive threat at the top of the funnel and in speed-first workflows, especially for teams that want “conversation → prototype → code” in one loop. 2️⃣ Figma is still better positioned as the canonical collaborative workspace for design systems, detailed editing, and handoff across large teams. 3️⃣ If Claude Design keeps improving precision, governance, and collaboration, it could eat into more of Figma over time; today, it looks more like a wedge than a full displacement. 4️⃣ Given Figma's exceptional managerial and execution track record, it still has a lot of growth options at its disposal.
