Pharmacomicrobiomics

Biotech & PharmaBiology

Dr. Amine ZORGANI even if not pursuing microbiome therapeutics, Pharma/Biotech should be interested in interactions between drugs and (mostly gut) microbiome. But it is too complex for an industry that is still "throwing sh*t at the wall and see what sticks". Pharmacogenomics is already hard, so having to take into account all the microbial genes, more numerous by a few orders of magnitude, is mission impossible with current tools. Pharmacomicrobiomics is still in its early days but should be front and center in drug development -it may actually the key to increasing response rates by helping identify personalized microbiome interventions that enhance drugs/prodrugs or prevent them from being metabolized before they can work.
