Mass Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence

Ethan Mollick doesn't need more publicity... but I think this is important: #genAI is empowering "the masses" 😄 to do things that were out of reach before, not just experts 🥸 and nerds 🤓. What they produce may not pass muster as professional, secure, deployable technology or outputs but it is right for them. If you want to see an otter on a plane working on a laptop, well that is your right and you are the best judge of what you like.

In that sense, genAI is raising the floor. It is also raising the ceiling for experts in certain fields (a lot of scientific fields among them) but the risk-reward boundaries are very different and tougher to navigate. That is one of the reasons why, in my view, AI is boosting individuals and individual productivity but is not doing as much for organizational productivity. Another big reason is that individual productivity gains in an organization are synergistic: the whole is less than the sum of the parts.
