(Lack of) Creative Control
A new wave of AI generation tools for images and videos has triggered a lot of excitement and fear. The reaction goes something like this: "Wow! Look at how realistic this image is. Can you tell this image is AI-generated?" 🤔
And while it is true that AI-generated visuals can be scarily realistic 🤖, what is missing from this conversation is the question of control: how much control does the user have over what is generated? Or, another way to put it, do you get exactly what you want or do you get something that is inspired by your prompt(s) but difficult to tweak and fine-tune? 🎨
Other than adversarial applications, which I am not trying to minimize (think deepfakes, disinformation), the business value of these tools depends on the degree of control the user can exert.
And there are legitimate concerns over creativity and ownership. If you can't precisely direct the outcome, are you really creating, or just collaborating with an unpredictable partner?
The implications for industries like marketing, entertainment, and online content creation are enormous. In some contexts, AI's unpredictability can be a feature, sparking new ideas and directions. In others, it could be a hindrance, complicating workflows and standardization.
As we embrace these tools, it's crucial to think about how we can better control them. Fine-tuning the output isn't just about getting what we want; it's about maintaining authenticity and ensuring the end result aligns with our vision. 🌟
