Brian Christian's 2012 videotaped talk at the Santa Fe Institute contains many little treasures. One of then begins at 15:40 in the video: Claude Shannon's wife was a computer... Until the middle of the 20th Century, computer was a job title, people who perform calculations. In fact, the word computer as it is used today was intended as a metaphor to help explain the new machinery: "these machines are intended to carry out any operations which could be done by a human computer." Talk about a reversal!
